This dill dressing is the perfect topping or dip for salads, chicken, fish, and more!
Dill dressing recipe
Dressings and dips can turn ordinary meals into delicious, fancy dishes. They add variety, and when you use ingredients like homemade sour cream, they add an extra probiotic punch.
I love this healthy dill dressing on top of a lettuce salad. It is also perfect for dipping vegetables, as well as topping chicken or as a salmon dipping sauce. It’s also wonderful for potato salad. Or with pizza, if you’re that type of person. 🙂
Whenever I want a creamy, fresh dressing or dip, I whip up this dill dressing. It uses ingredients I often have on hand, and it goes together in seconds.
It’s kid friendly, too. We use it whenever we want something like a ranch dressing or dip. I love how much healthier it is compared to anything you can buy at the store.

Easy homemade dressing
This dill dressing is customizable, too! If you have yogurt instead of sour cream, or the other way around, you can use all or part yogurt or sour cream. When you make it with grass fed, raw milk sour cream or yogurt, this dill dressing is heathy and nutrient dense.
You can also swap the dill or garlic for dried dill or garlic powder. I do prefer fresh for the best flavor, but the dried option tastes great, too, and are a great last minute solution.
It works great to serve this dill dressing right after making it. But if you want even better flavor, I recommend making it several hours before you plan to use it, and letting it sit in the refrigerator so the flavors can develop fully. It is also delicious the next day!
Tips for making dill dressing
When you aren’t used to making your own dressing, the idea of whipping up a batch of dill dressing can seem daunting – but I promise it isn’t!
- There are plenty of ways to change up this dill dressing, too. You can use buttermilk in place of all of the sour cream or yogurt. This will make a dressing with a thinner consistency, which works nicely for salads.
- My favorite way to blend this recipe is with an immersion blender. Not only does it mix the ingredients together nicely, but it makes for an easy cleanup.
- Keep this recipe on hand for last minute get-togethers. It’s great to be able to whip up a quick salad for your guests- especially with this yummy dressing.

Dill dressing variations
Homemade salad dressings are so easy, and there are endless possibilities to what kinds you can make. They can be simple, or include lots of different ingredients.
Salad dressings are something I never buy. I learned this from my Mom. If you keep the essential dressing ingredients on hand, you can make so many different dressings and dips, easily and quickly. This way, they are so much healthier than store bought options with unwanted ingredients.
Here are some homemade dressing ingredients that I always like to keep on hand:
- Olive oil
- Balsamic vinegar
- Apple cider vinegar
- Lemon juice
- Dijon mustard
- Honey
- Salt and pepper
- Garlic powder
- Dried herbs
- Mayonaise
- Sour cream
- Yogurt
Good Dijon mustard makes a difference, too. I like to get Dijon mustard from Trader Joe’s. Apparently it is really made in France! I just know that it tastes amazing.

Equipment for making homemade dressings and dips
You can make pretty much any homemade salad dressing by mixing, whisking, or shaking. I like keeping a bottle like this on hand. I can toss some ingredients in, shake it up, and it’s ready to go.
If you want to really whizz it up, you can use an immersion blender. I often do this when I make vinaigrette type dressings. This is the immersion blender I have.

How to store dill dressing
Like most dressings, this homemade dill dressing is stored properly in an airtight container in the fridge. It will stay fresh for 1-2 weeks.
With how versatile this recipe is though, I seriously doubt it will last that long.
Health benefits of dill dressing
Dill is known for its unique flavor, but few know how healthy it actually is for you. In fact, on WebMD, it states that Dill has the power to reduce your cholesterol and increase your heart health.
