How to make magnesium deodorant

If you’re like me, avoiding toxic chemicals found in commercial deodorants is a must. I love this magnesium deodorant recipe so much. It’s easy to put together and only has 3 ingredients.

This is my favourite magnesium deodorant recipe that I honestly cannot believe that I didn’t share sooner! Not only is this a nice, light option to stop body odor in its tracks but this recipe does not have baking soda. It’s easy to put together and a great option for people who are sensitive to baking soda.

Even better, you can choose how you apply with a spray bottle or a roller bottle as well as customize the scents so you can make a deodorant that works perfectly for you. When it comes to toiletries that you use every day, there is nothing more luxurious than using items made exactly for you.

Magnesium chloride deodorant

When you are beginning to research how to make magnesium deodorant, having a high quality magnesium chloride is important. This is because magnesium acts as a salt-like property to keep the odor away.

The other ingredient that you need to make homemade deodorant is vegetable glycerine. Vegetable glycerine will make application much smoother and stay on longer.

How to make magnesium deodorant?

In my home, I am constantly on the move. Between my work, my young kids and the animals, I have a lot on my plate.

While I think sweating is good, because it is a way to remove toxins, after all (source), I hate to stink. Therefore, I needed a deodorant that is toxin free and actually works. After trying many recipes, I learned how to make magnesium deodorant and I am officially obsessed.

I love this magnesium deodorant recipe because it is so simple. With a few ingredients, you can have your own natural deodorant within a matter of minutes.

Tips for making deodorant

Despite the fact that this recipe only requires a few ingredients and is super simple to make, there are a few tips and tricks to help you make the best deodorant for you and your family.

Here are a few tricks to keep in mind with your magnesium deodorant

  • I always recommend that you double or triple this so you have backup. I will typically make 2-3 batches at once so that I don’t have to worry about running low anytime soon.
  • The application bottle is completely up to you for what you decide. While I prefer a roll on bottle, I have friends and family that make this recipe with a glass spray bottle instead.
  • Add in essential oil scents based on the time of the year. For winter, warm citrusy scents or spices are my go-to, while in the spring I love to try a flowery scent.
  • This can sting if you apply to your underarms after shaving, so wait a few minutes before applying.
  • If you are magnesium deficient, when you apply this magnesium deodorant, your skin may tingle when it is applied. If this is the case, try to incorporate more magnesium into your routine to help restore your magnesium levels. Once magnesium levels are higher, I find that the tingling doesn’t happen.

Homemade Magnesium Deodorant Recipe

In only a few minutes, you can take three ingredients and make your own deodorant that will keep you smelling fresh for hours. Get ready for your new favorite toiletry and discover how to make homemade magnesium deodorant…

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Combine all three liquid ingredients into a cup and lightly stir together.
  2. Using a funnel, pour the liquid into your 1 oz container of choice
  3. Use on clean underarms as needed

How to use magnesium deodorant

Before using, shake to combine the oils with the ingredients. They will separate, but that is a normal occurrence with natural ingredients like the one in this deodorant.

To apply roll (or spray) onto underarms – use it as you would use a traditional deodorant! Every morning, I apply it as part of my routine between brushing my teeth and washing my face with honey face wash.

This recipe can be made in batches and is easy to store for later use. I like to keep one in my bathroom for the morning then another bottle in my bag for when I need to freshen up when we are out and about.

Essential oils variation

In my experience, traditional deodorants have strong artificial fragrances that have been shown to act as endocrine disruptors. They also contain harmful ingredients like aluminum, which has been linked to cancer.

When you make your own deodorant, its an opportunity to mix and match with scents that work specifically for you. I love to play with different Plant Therapy essential oils to see what works for me.

Some single use oils that work really love are:

Plant Therapy also has some incredible blends that I have incorporated into deodorants that I just love. My top essential oil blends for this magnesium deodorant are:

Smelling good is one of the many benefits to using this homemade deodorant recipe. Keep reading to learn more about why this toiletry is so powerful…

What are the benefits of using magnesium deodorant?

Magnesium deodorant is a safe alternative to traditional deodorant for several reasons.

  1. This homemade recipe contains safe, clean products that are void of chemicals. This means when I use my homemade deodorant, I am able to avoid toxins that would otherwise enter my body.
  2. Several commercial deodorants are designed to clog pores and prevent sweating. Personally, I choose to avoid products that do that because I want to be able to cleanse toxins as naturally as possible. This magnesium deodorant will prevent odor, but still allow your body to sweat as much as necessary to detox.
  3. Magnesium on the skin works to kill the smelly bacteria so it will not irritate the skin, as other homemade deodorants can.
  4. Applying magnesium to the skin is a great way for the body to absorb magnesium to restore healthy levels.

Are there any side effects?

This deodorant is one of my favourites to use, but it is important to keep in mind that you still may sweat when you wear it.

Since the purpose of this deodorant is to prevent odours, when you first start wearing it, you may need to do an armpit detox with a charcoal mask. Personally, I like to use my black drawing salve recipe to pull out any impurities that are causing extra smells.

What is the shelf life of magnesium deodorant?

The shelf life for this magnesium deodorant recipe is around a year or longer. The essential oils may fade over time, but the magnesium and vegetable glycerine are stable for a very long time.

How to store magnesium deodorant properly

If you store your homemade magnesium deodorant in a glass bottle, then you should store it in a cool, dark place. In my bathroom, I keep mine in a drawer to avoid heat or I will keep it on the top of my dresser away from direct sunlight.

Since I usually keep a bottle with me when we are out for the day, I recommend keeping it in a cool, dark place (for me, that’s a backpack for the days we are adventuring or running errands).
