The best homemade trail mix recipe

I love this recipe for so many reasons! Here are a few that keep me coming back to this snack time and time again:

  1. This recipe is so easy to customize so you can make sure everyone can enjoy it whether they are on the GAPs diet or not.
  2. When you are in a season of being very busy (like when you are nursing a baby or the kids are in a lot of activities), it’s great to be able to grab a snack that is hearty and nutritious.
  3. The fermenting the nuts makes them much easier to digest, and unlocks their nutrients to make them more available to the body.

Some yummy things I love to add to the recipe:

  • Dried fruit (unsweetened & organic is best)
  • Natural chocolate chunks
  • Carob baking chips (not GAPs approved)
  • Coconut chips (add a healthy fat with a yummy texture)

How to make this trail mix recipe with crispy nuts

Ingredients:

  • Fermented nuts (see below for how to make crispy fermented nuts)
  • Unsweetened coconut chips

Instructions:

  1. Add to a mixing bowl
  2. Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands
  3. Store in a glass jar in the freezer

Why do I ferment the nuts ahead of time?

Fermenting nuts does take a bit of time, so I like to make a bulk of fermented nuts at a time so that I can use them in all sorts of recipes like this homemade trail mix recipe.

I also make them in advance because of the time it takes to ferment the nuts completely. Between soaking your raw nuts and dehydrating them, it can take a few days to get all of those nutrients unlocked and make them easier to digest.

How to ferment nuts:

Fermenting nuts is a super simple process that has so many benefits for you and your family. I like to think of it as a secret code that unlocks a ton of nutrition for our bodies to utilize, while also making the nuts easier to digest. While you can simply soak nuts in water and salt, fermenting them is my favorite way to make crispy nuts.

Here’s how to make crispy nuts:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Add almonds, whey, and water to a bowl.
  2. Cover with a dish towel and let sit at room temperature for 48 hours (12 hours minimum).
  3. Strain almonds then lay them out on a cooking sheet in an even layer. Add salt.
  4. To dehydrate, bake in the oven at the lowest temperature for up to 12 hours. Alternatively, you can put them in a dehydrator if you have one.
