Smoothie Ingredients GAPS Diet

GAPS smoothies are not just delicious. They are also great for supporting gut and overall wellness. I love throwing a few ingredients in the blender during a busy morning with the kids or whenever I need a nutrient-packed lunch or snack. Smoothies are also super easy to portion control. I’ll use a larger cup attachment if I’m making a larger batch to share with my family, and the go-to size if it’s just a quick pick-me-up for myself.

Nutrient dense smoothies are one of my favorite ways to incorporate tasty, healthy ingredients like fats, egg yolks, fruits, juices, and milk kefir into my diet. You can tailor gut-friendly detox smoothies to your specific dietary needs and preferences. I love including organic coconut oil and egg yolks in my gut-friendly smoothies for an extra nutrient kick. You can adjust the ingredients to suit your needs, whether you need more protein, healthy fats, fruits, or vegetables.

Benefits of ingredients in the GAPS Diet smoothies

GAPS smoothies are packed with vitamins, minerals, and probiotics that support the gut. I like adding milk kefir to my organic smoothie recipes. Milk kefir is especially helpful for people on the GAPS diet or anyone who wants to consume a lot of gut-friendly bacteria and beneficial yeasts (source).

I like to add fresh or frozen fruit, like berries, pineapple, and peaches, for extra vitamins and flavor. I also like to add organic virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil has a ton of benefits, including improving skin health, boosting metabolism, supporting heart health, increasing good cholesterol, and controlling blood sugar.

Smoothies are one of my favorite ways to enjoy items on the GAPS diet food list without spending a lot of time cooking or preparing food. You can try many variations if you prefer more of a dessert type of smoothie while still getting the health benefits of coconut oil and raw egg yolks.

Here are some ideas for delicious, beneficial ingredients for homemade GAPS smoothies, which can help satisfy your dessert cravings after a meal.

Choosing a blender

There are many different blenders out there to choose from. I found that investing in a good blender is super helpful for anyone following a whole-food, nourishing diet or in any of the GAPS diet stages. That said, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a blender. Affordable, basic blenders will also work.

However, investing in a quality blender that is built to last a lifetime as a kitchen staple makes sense as well. Here are a couple of great options Vitamix, Ninja Glass Top Heat Safe Blender (great for those avoiding plastics), and a budget-friendly option that should work just fine for smoothies and is under $30 by Black & Decker.

How can I maximize the nutrients in my smoothies?

I choose nutrient-dense ingredients, like kefir or yogurt, fresh juices, fruit, and healthy fat and protein sources. I use fresh, organic produce to maximize nutrient content and avoid pesticides whenever possible.

My smoothie preparation tips

  • You can add cold-pressed juices to get more nutrients from fruits and vegetables.
  • Try using coconut milk or water as a base for dairy-free GAPS smoothies.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with ingredients. Maximize the GAPS diet benefits by incorporating nutrient-dense foods and tailoring recipes to fit your preferences and nutritional needs.
  • I recommend enjoying gut-friendly smoothies right after blending. If you need to store your smoothies, use airtight containers and keep them in the refrigerator.
  • Consume within 24 hours or freeze portions in airtight containers and thaw as needed.

My experience with GAPS smoothies

Smoothies have been a large part of my and my family’s diet for years now. I often gravitate toward low-sugar smoothies and experiment with combinations to ensure we get the most out of each smoothie.

Why use raw egg yolks in all the GAPS Diet Smoothies?

You can add raw egg yolks to any smoothie, even a dessert smoothie, to add extra nutrition. I use egg yolks from our chickens, so I trust they’re very healthy and fresh. Dr. Natasha says that you always want to ensure your egg yolks are from somewhere you trust if you have them raw.

Raw egg yolks are highly recommended by Dr. Natasha, and are a key ingredient in digestive boosting smoothies because they’re full of gut-supporting nutrients and minerals. Egg yolks provide significant A, D, E, K, and B vitamins. Egg yolks are also an excellent source of healthy fats and proteins, and raw egg yolks contain lecithin, which is beneficial for liver function.

Look for pasture-fed, organically-raised eggs if you don’t have backyard chickens. I recommend sourcing your eggs from local organic or free-range farms. Small farms usually have stricter hygiene standards than large industrial operations. Always use fresh eggs and make sure the eggs have no cracks or damage. You can check the freshness by placing the egg in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs sink while older eggs float.

Don’t worry about the taste. I know adding raw egg yolks into a smoothie can sound a little crazy if you’re new to the GAPS diet, but you can’t even tell they’re there. When mixed with other ingredients, you won’t even notice them.
