If you’re a shampoo bar fan, like I am, you’ll know all about the shine boosting rinse. This is a beautiful, upgraded version of the apple cider vinegar hair rinse, with lots of nutrients that are so beneficial for hair.

How to use shampoo bars

If you’re new to how shampoo bars and rinses work, let’s run through that quickly.

Basically, shampoo bars wash hair using nourishing, hair friendly ingredients in the form of a soap bar. Because it is a soap bar, hair needs to have its PH reset after washing.

An easy way to do this is to rinse hair with a diluted apple cider vinegar solution. This resets hair to the proper PH.

On its own, raw apple cider vinegar is wonderful for hair and scalp health. It enhances shine, smooths hair, reduces frizz, and helps to prevent dandruff.

Add some beautiful herbs, and it’s even better!

Let’s take a quick look at what herbs we’re using, and what they do.

  • Horsetail – This herb is full of silica, which strengthens hair. Horsetail also contains lots of calcium, magnesium, chromium, potassium, copper, iron, and other important nutrients. It is also slightly astringent, which is helpful if your hair tends to be oily.
  • Nettle – Nettle is another herb that is full of vitamins and minerals. It works to nourish the scalp and make it healthy, which also makes hair stronger. Nettle contains vitamins, A, B, C, D, K, as well as calcium, magnesium, boron, chromium, silica, and others.
  • Lavender – Lavender calms inflammation and increases circulation in the scalp. This enhances hair growth. Lavender also smells wonderful.

To use this gorgeous concoction, simply mix 1/4 cup with 1 pint water. (Adjust the amount depending on your hair and water type.) After shampooing and rinsing, pour mixture over hair. Let it sit for a minute or longer, and then rinse out. You can also leave it without rinsing. Just experiment and see what your hair likes!

How to make organic hair care

I love how simple and easy this herbal hair rinse recipe is. You really just toss a few ingredients into a mason jar, let it sit, and it’s ready to go.

I like to strain it into a glass bottle and keep it in the bathroom. Whenever I want to wash my hair, it’s right there, ready to go.

Finding an organic hair care routine that I really love took my a while! First, I wanted to be able to make everything I use. I also wanted to be 100% in love with every single ingredient. Basically, I wanted hair care products so pure that they would help enhance health, rather than add to our ever growing toxic burden

I finally nailed my organic hair care routine, and I share all of the DIY organic hair care products that I use in this blog post, which you can read here

  1. Hi Marisa, I made this recipe. I let it sit out for 4 weeks. I just looked at it at the end of my 4 weeks, and it now has a foggy/white film or sediment floating at the top. What is this? Can I still use it?

  2. I’d love to try this recipe, thank you so much for all the information! Did you ever test the pH of the tallow shampoo bar?

    • You’re welcome! I haven’t tested the ph. I just know that hair likes to be more acidic than bars tend to be, so rinsing with apple cider vinegar after using a shampoo bar is a good idea to reset the ph of hair. It also boosts smoothness and shine. Hope that helps!
