Homemade shaving butter
This shaving butter recipe is rich, creamy, and fluffy. Basically, everything you want for a close shave. It also helps prevent cuts and irritation. The nourishing ingredients soothe and moisturize skin. My husband uses this shaving butter every time he shaves, and loves it. I also really like using it.
Customize it
I normally make this with a combination of tea tree and lavender essential oils. Those are great for soothing skin and preventing irritation. But, you could definitely get really creative, depending on who you’re making it for.
For a masculine scent, you could replace most of the lavender with something like cedarwood. There are a lot of possibilities! Just make sure the the essential you use is good for soothing skin, and won’t irritate it.

The perfect Father’s Day gift
This is one of those handmade body care products that make the perfect, unique gift. Father’s Day is coming up soon. Keep this shaving butter recipe in mind! Package it up with a personalized label and some rustic wrapping, and it will make the ultimate practical gift.
Safety first
If you’re using this shaving butter in the shower, keep in mind that it could make the shower floor a bit slippery. You might use a nonslip shower mat, or sit on the edge of the bathtub or on a shower seat when you use it.
This shaving butter recipe doesn’t use any water, so no preservative is needed. But, you will want to make sure to only use clean, dry hands when removing it from the jar for use. Otherwise, if you introduce water into the mixture, it could mold or spoil.

Hello! I would like to add a preservative to mine since it will mostly likely be coming in contact with wet hands. How much would you add to it? Have you ever added a preservative to yours?
Thank you!
This looks so good! What a great gift to make for friends!
adding this to the list of things I should make at home.
I need to try this. Trying to make things at home.
Hello! Does anyone know how long it took for The shave cream to solidify once in the refrigerator?
This is probably a weird question, but what would you substitute the Castile soap for? I’ve used Castile Soap before and it causes issues with my skin.
You can use any liquid soap that your skin likes 🙂
I have 5 sons and would love to make the large size batch for them and a few relatives this Christmas. Can you share the measurements you used in the video? And did you use 2 or 4 oz jars? How many does the large batch make? I can’t wait..looks amazing!! Thanks
Yes! The recipe makes 8 fl. oz., which fills two 4 oz. jars. You can easily double or triple or even quadruple the recipe 🙂
If I quadrupled the recipe, it seems the amount of sugar (in the sugar scrub)(8 cups) is a lot. Is that ok or should I reduce it?
I find that using only Coconut Oil works like a charm, don’t need all the other ingredients.
Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering if I could use powder SCI insteed of castile soap
I’m not sure, I haven’t tried that. I’m guessing it could change the texture a bit.
Mine came out runny. . Like a thin cool whip. Any thoughts on how to thicken it. I did however put part in the refrigerator and it solidified a little more.
I made this shave butter this morning. Although I do get a smooth soft shave, mine seemed to turn out too… thin I guess you could say. Nothing like a cream or butter (whipped) texture. Itbwas almost like a liquidy coolwhip (slightly runny). Any advice to fix this?
Hmm I haven’t had that happen… did you use any substitutions? I wonder if chilling it for a bit, and then letting it come back to room temp would help. Let me know how it goes! I’m happy to help further.
Does this clog the razor and make it rust since it contains so many thick oils?
I haven’t had that happen. It is light enough that it helps the razor glide nicely. Also, the oils help prevent rust. 🙂
Does it separate at room temperature or over a period?
Will it melt at room temperature?
It stays together at room temperature without melting, and I’ve never had it separate 🙂
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait to try this recipe! What is it’s shelf life?
Since it doesn’t contain any water, it will last quite a while. I like to say about a year 🙂
Could you use avocado oil as a replacement for olive oil?
Absolutely! That would work great.
Can I use shavings from a bar of Castile soap or should I use the liquid? Will that change it too much?
I’ve never tried it that way, so I’m not sure! If you try it, let me know how it works! 🙂
I make my own bath soap and shampoo. I made this using a base soap of goats milk, which is a solid block. I melted it in the microwave and then added it to the other ingredients before whipping. It worked for me without getting hard. You could also use any other type of bar soap (which may contain ingredients you don’t want to use) with the same results. A hard bar of soap is a hard bar of soap, if that makes since to you. The only thing I am wondering, is why would you use soap in the first place if you will be getting into the shower, tub etc., after or even during the time you are using this shave cream. It’s repetitive to me.
